There were so many fun things about Mateja’s at Guayabitos that I just loved. They usually had a live band. The bands were always surprisingly good. One day there was a band with a singer who sang Adele’s “No One Like You” and hit the notes spot on. She blew everyone away. Another day I mistakenly had my camera recording while a band was singing “Come on people now, smile on your brother everybody get together try to love one another right now”. In the video without even realizing it, I taped people walking around the restaurant hugging each other. It doesn’t get any better than that.

And Dogs! Mateja said she had 7 dogs. I enjoyed sitting back watching them play on the beach. Pure joy unleashed. None of the dogs begged. They were not fat but they must have been well fed or trained. She also has a Chihuahua that follows her like a shadow and made me laugh everytime I saw him.

Yes, I spent a LOT of time eating while in Guayabitos, Mexico. If you like seafood you will be in heaven.  Once I tried the shrimp quesadillas at Mateja’s I was hooked and will crave them until I get more. The shrimp are ginormous and I don’t know why the dairy products are so damn good there. Oh – and the pastries are amazing. I bought coconut macaroons from a kid on the beach that were like none I have ever tasted.

I always get asked if I get sick and I can honestly say that I do not ever get sick in Mexico. I have been more sick from eating in restaurants at home – not sure if that is good luck or bad luck. I do use common sense though. I rarely eat meat in Mexico and if I do, I make sure it is well cooked. I don’t drink the tap water. I am very careful not to get dehydrated which is easy and a great excuse to have fresh coconut water. I ate yoghurt every day. I had to take it easy on the papaya and pineapple but mainly because I was just being piggy about it.  I don’t know if there is any logic to this but it works for me and I am going back for more.Sunset in Guayabitos
